Editor’s Note: This is a guest post by Oscar West. Oscar is an astrology geek and (self-proclaimed) cool dad who likes sharing his passion in philosophy and astrology. Aside from writing blog posts about everything under the sun, he also does social media consulting for small businesses and tries to learn how to code in his free time. When he’s not contemplating about the meaning of life, you can usually find him roughhousing with his kids or indulging on his favorite ube-flavored ice cream.
To become an astrologer, you must not only understand what it is but also encompass bodies of knowledge to help master this craft.
Physicist and Astrologist, Alois Treindl, believes that Western Astrology is “more an art than a science; a body of knowledge collected over thousands of years through experience.” So, to be an astrologer, you need to study deeper into what astrology is.
Astrology is a combination of mythology, history, psychology, astronomy, geometry, and more. All of these will contribute to making you a successful astrologer, and you can make the most out of your knowledge of these different areas.
The following list will tell you the different bodies of knowledge you should know to be on the astrologist path.
1. Knowledge of the History of Astrology
In anything you do, knowing its history is the first step in understanding what it is you want to do and how to approach it. An obvious body of knowledge necessary to prepare you to become an astrologer is knowing the origin and evolution of Astrology.
Studying how Astrology has evolved is a great way to share what you know with others and will help develop your skills further in this field.
2. Knowledge of Psychology
You might not yet be aware, but did you know that Psychology can be considered the elder sister of Astrology? Psychology studies the mind and behavior of a person, while Astrology has numerous branches of psychology.
From astrology, you will find more about a person than what they already know about themselves. There are also beliefs that everything happens for a reason.
Psychology and Astrology both read into the behavior and environment of a person and will give you a head start in becoming an astrologer.
3. Knowledge of Mathematics
Astrology consists of charts, which uses mathematics. Based on the Zodiac, there are twelve charts because the Earth spins 12 times around one full orbit of the sun. In total, it spins 360 times.
To study the reason behind why we have 12 months on our calendar, it’s useful to have a background in mathematics. You’ll see how the future is determined based on the position of the planets, stars, and the Sun.
You’ll also learn about Trigonometry in Mathematics, which can help in determining the positions of the planet.
4. Knowledge of Metaphysics
You’ll find that Metaphysics is linked to characterizing the universe and describing the traits of reality. Combining Astrology and Metaphysics gives you an understanding of human evolution and behavior. Astrology studies planets, while metaphysics studies the concepts like being, knowing the identity, time, and space.
5. Knowledge of Astronomy
KnowingAstronomy can help you with being an astrologer. Astronomy studies everything from celestial bodies to stars, asteroids, galaxies, and planets. It uses theories and observations, which can help when further expanding your knowledge and understanding of astrology. Meanwhile, Astrology focuses on the positions of the stars and planets. They find relations between the movements of planets with the behavior on earth.
Astrology is something worth studying and learning about. It can help you understand why things exist and why things work the way they do based on the positioning of the planets. Although there are many things you should learn about before becoming an astrologer, expanding your knowledge about any field is a great way to accomplish your goals.
